Knowing how mutual funds are categorized aids in choosing the best funds for asset allocation and diversification purposes. For example, there are stock mutual funds, bond mutual funds, and money market mutual funds. Stock and bond funds, as primary fund types, have dozens of sub-categories further describing the investment style of the fund.
Opening an Account to Buy Mutual Funds. If you don’t already have an investment account at a brokerage firm or mutual fund company, you’ll need to open one before you’re ready to make your first purchase. Opening an account doesn’t require money; all you need to do is choose the company where you’ll invest and follow their procedures.
Mutual Funds Have High Sales Charges. Should a sales charge be included in the disadvantages of mutual funds list? It’s difficult to justify paying a sales charge when you have a plethora of no-load mutual funds. But, then again, it’s difficult to say that a sales charge is a disadvantage of mutual funds when you have thousands of mutual fund options that do not have sales charges. Sales charges are too broad to be included on my list of disadvantages of mutual funds.

They’re simple enough to be understood and used by beginners but versatile enough to be used by professional money managers, who often use them to build portfolios for clients.
When you can keep expenses low, and buy quality funds at the same time, your long-term returns are likely to be superior.
