This popular app has a lot of fans, and it runs on Linux systems courtesy of Adobe AIR, a platform that allows for You Need a Budget’s slick look with easy-to-read graphic qualities. YNAB is great for anyone who’s really into keeping tabs on their budget, and it’s the budgeting software to check out for anyone who wants to get started with budgeting. It offers some great options for support, and for learning about budgeting and living within your means.
If you’ve ever bought or sold stocks, there’s a chance you may have done so based on feelings and emotions rather than cold, hard evidence. You may want to believe you trade based on objective information, keeping an eye focused intently on your investment goals. But you’re human. You buy a stock because you saw a pundit talk about it on television. You sell a stock because it’s lost some value and you’re freaked out. You’ve probably bought or sold stocks simply because it feels good to make a transaction.

Before you get started, AceMoney asks if you want to use the sample file that comes with the software. I recommend using it to experiment with the software to see how it works. You can also start with a new data file, but it may be easier to rename the sample file, add your own accounts, edit budget categories and make other adjustments while deleting the accounts that come with the sample file. After renaming the data file and saving it, you will need to restart AceMoney to use the new file.
If you tend to carry a credit card balance rather than pay off your balance every month, then you’ve seen a finance charge added to your balance. Finance charges are applied to credit card balances that aren’t paid before the grace period. Unlike most other credit card fees, finance charges aren’t a flat fee. Instead, the finance charge is calculated for each billing cycle based on your balance and interest rate. Generally, higher balances and interest rates result in higher finance charges.
Before downloading transactions, you can select predefined periods of time for the transactions you want to see in the register, and it’s great to have this option, which is particularly helpful if you only want the past six month’s worth (for example) of transactions instead of two years worth. Not all personal finance software offers this option, and you can easily end up downloading months of transactions that you don’t want to track.
